McDonald’s Leads the Way as Best Employer

McDonald's voted one of the Best Companies for the seventh year in a row

14th March 2011

McDonald's has been ranked 5th best large company to work for at the recent Great Place to Work awards in the Burlington Hotel. This is the seventh consecutive year that McDonald's has been voted one of the best workplaces in the country - one of only 7 companies to have achieved this accolade. McDonald’s also received a 'Special Recognition' award for Management Development at an awards ceremony in the Burlington Hotel in Dublin.

The Great Places to Work study is the largest annual labour force survey undertaken in the country and McDonald’s was announced as one of the Best Companies McDonald’s employs 3,600 people in its restaurants throughout Ireland on both a part time and full time basis across its 77 restaurants.

Commenting on behalf of all the crew, Michele Ryan, HR Director with McDonald’s, commented on the company’s flexibility and the investment it makes in training, "This Award is recognition of the very high standards of employment practice that we have in place at McDonald’s. We champion the issues that matter to all of our employees: work-life balance, career development, and training. And with a number of practices in place such as flexible working hours and a weekend only work policy for 5th and 6th year students, we provide crew with the freedom to ensure that their role works with the many other elements within their lives."

"Our National Employee Scholarship Programme recognises outstanding students in the course of their employment at McDonald's and rewards their accomplishments in their studies, in serving their communities and working hard to deliver an outstanding experience for our customers."

"McDonald's is more than the technical training such as how to cook a hamburger and maintain health and safety and food safety standards. Our training systems develop transferable skills and other competencies such as customer service, teamwork, communication and leadership. "

"In addition, we have clearly defined career paths with opportunities to progress for both full time and part time managers. There are three promotional levels that can be achieved through part time work. For those who wish to have a career with us there are opportunities to progress through the corporate track - 50% of our senior team in McDonald’s started at the front counter and 40% of our franchisees started working on the front counter," concluded Ms Ryan.

The best company assessment was carried out by the Great Place to Work® Institute Ireland. The Best Companies study sets out to identify and recognise the finest employers, and therefore the most satisfied workforces in Ireland and throughout the European Union. The Irish study is the largest annual labour force survey undertaken in this country.

It’s the views of the employees that count when deciding if a company will make the Irish ‘Best Companies to Work for’ list. A random selection of employees in each participating organisation complete a confidential questionnaire, rating their employers on almost 60 elements covering communication, training & development, pride, work life balance, diversity and teamwork in the workplace. The questionnaire aims to find out what the employees’ views are on the policies and practices that are in place in their organisation. Surveys are returned directly to the Great Place to Work® Institute by each individual employee, therefore ensuring confidentiality – and honesty!
