Introduction

McDonalds Ireland - McCafeOur involvement with coffee began in 1993, when the enterprising people in McDonald’s Australia opened up the first McCafé to satisfy their customers’ passion for coffee.

Today, McCafé stands for great coffee and food and a relaxing place to chat, check your email, or grab a coffee on the way to work.

We are passionate about serving you great tasting coffees and that is why there are more than 1,000 McCafés around the world, including the six we have in Ireland. And there are more on the way…

The Coffee Story

Everyone knows that coffee is more than just a drink; it has been a way of life since the 15th century. It is the perfect pick-me-up when you’re tired, a great way to socialise with your friends and a simple pleasure when you just want some time out.

Two out of three people around the world are coffee drinkers and every day, we drink more than two and a half billion cups of it. Black, white, frothy or iced, coffee has become a part of everyday life for many of us.

Coffee vocabulary

McCafe LogoAs befits a beverage of such distinction, coffee has a language all of its own.

  • Body
This refers to how coffee feels in the mouth. A full-bodied coffee has a rich texture and weight on the tongue, with a lingering taste. Coffee lacking body is thin and watery in texture.
  • Crema
This is the golden layer that sits on top of a good cup of espresso. It comes from the oil in the beans and helps to lock in the coffee’s aroma and flavour.
  • Decaf coffee
Decaf coffee must have at least 97 per cent of its caffeine removed from the raw, green coffee beans through the decaffeination process.
  • Flavour
The taste of coffee is influenced by where and how the beans have been grown. A coffee can have flavours as diverse as nutty, earthy, spicy and fruity.
  • Fragrance
A coffee’s fragrance is released when the bean is roasted and then again when it is ground.

The McCafé Blend

We use 100 per cent Arabica beans from South and Central America to make coffee with a rich, full aroma and smooth taste.

Our Columbian and Central American beans are full flavoured, fruity and a little bitter, while our Brazilian beans have a strong, rich, earthy character with medium body.

It is an exciting combination – coffee with a kick that works in harmony with milk to deliver great cappuccino and lattes.

We only use Kenco sustainable development coffee beans which have been carefully selected from farms certified by the Rainforest Alliance. Kenco’s support of these farms helps coffee farmers to build a more sustainable future.

Rainforest Alliance

When you see the Rainforest Alliance certified seal of approval, you know you are buying a product that has been grown in a sustainable way. RA is an international non-profit environmental organisation that helps farmers earn a decent living and improve their quality of life in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Forests and wildlife are protected on certified farms and workers have access to clean water, medical care and education for themselves and their families.
